The Heart of our herd
At Dogwood Ranch, our horses are more than just animals—they’re partners in healing. Each member of our herd has a unique story and personality, contributing to the heart of our equine therapy programs. From guiding foster youth toward emotional breakthroughs to supporting veterans and first responders through life’s challenges, these incredible animals play an irreplaceable role in restoring hope, one life at a time.
Take a moment to meet the herd and learn more about the special companions who make transformation possible at Dogwood Ranch.
This big draft horse lives up to his name - in both body and spirit. With a heart the size of Texas, his big, brown eyes see through to your soul. Most people will testify that Big Dan is the horse that makes them feel the safest and he is the easiest to connect with. He's a gentle giant who is loved by all who know him.
Oreo is a miniature horse. Everyone falls in love with her. Oreo was born blind in both eyes. She has a lot to teach us all about adaptation, depending on friends, and learning someone's story before passing judgment. We love you, Oreo! You are as sweet as your name.
Sketch was named appropriately. He is very easily spooked and has big reactions to noises. He uses that sensitivity in a positive way during sessions. He is a loving protector and keeps an eye out for anything that can be scary - like those scary leaves that blow across the parking lot! You're a good boy, Sketch!
Grey is a people (and horse) pleaser. He doesn't try to climb to the top of the totem pole in his pasture like the other geldings. He is content to be a companion. He's consistent and gentle, but can also be a tattletale if the other boys are misbehaving.
Squirrel is a fan favorite. He may have tiny little hooves, but he stomps them on the ground like a full-sized donkey. He can also go toe to toe with the big donkeys' stubbornness. But he is very sweet and loves attention. He has the softest nose of the entire herd!
Terra is another one of our miniature horses. She's a sassy little princess and loves to show off her big kicks. She runs fast, but will stand still to have her hair brushed and braided. Then she's off running again. She loves hay, but tries to eat the grass on the other side of the fence, too. She hears it's greener.
Shamrock is one of our "grandmas". She has aged well and has recently retired from a lot of years of amazing use in therapy. She enjoys the days by strolling through the pasture and chatting with her neighbor, Sox. She likes to join a session every now and then to share her love. She is the mom of one of our silliest geldings, Junior.
Mickey is a handsome little fella with piercing blue eyes. He's always looking for a way to escape the pasture and wander around freely. And at times he has been successful. He is Oreo's brother and she sticks close to him for safety and guidance. He's super playful and silly, but also a real gentleman.
Dot is our most faithful and consistent mare. She is very patient with the little kids and is one of the safest horses to ride. She has a nice, round body and a beautiful, soft coat. She's been painted, dressed up, and led through obstacles. She is a trooper for sure!
Junior is the silliest boy. He likes to have fun and makes silly faces. He is definitely the class clown. But Junior is also one of the most sensitive and protective horses in our herd. He knows his role and will do anything to protect those who he senses need protection. Clients fall in love with the comfort he provides.
Beauty is aptly named. In the summer, her signature spiky mane shines bright with copper highlights. She tends to hang back from the herd when new people come in. She wants to get a good read on the situation before she makes an appearance. When she does join the crowd, she makes herself known. She is particularly fond of the smallest children. If there is work to be done, she'll keep going until it is accomplished.
Gracie is a silly girl. She has been voted "Most likely to steal a hairbrush and throw it across the arena." She is young and playful. She is also very vocal. When Gracie says hello, you hear her all around the Ranch.
Sox is the other retired "grandma". She likes to hang out with Shamrock. Sometimes Sox forgets that she is our oldest horse. If you see a blonde beauty strutting around with her tail in the air or sunbathing in the pasture - that's Sox! If you step into her pasture with a halter, you better have your running shoes, too. She'll make you earn it!
Romeo is our only pony and he sure is handsome! He lives with the mini horses and Squirrel the donkey. He is gentle, polite, and beautiful. He tries to keep all of the minis in line, but he's graceful about it. He is the perfect size for those who haven't been around horses much and is a great ride for young children.
Diamond is all legs and stands a head above most of the rest of the herd. She is spunky, a quick learner and loves to run. Movement is her jam. She has a willingness to do anything as long as she can move! If you ever catch her mane in the light you will notice it looks like a shiny penny!
Legacy is a lover and will follow to the ends of the earth. She connects with everyone quickly and easily. Legacy was the first foal to be born at the Ranch. She is very special to all of us. Her coloring is gorgeous and she gives the best hugs.
Paco is our newest gelding and he is spicy! He has found his place in the herd quickly and loves to run circles around the other boys. He is tall, strong, and athletic. We are so glad that he has become a member of the Dogwood herd.
Daffy is our new mare and is the first to catch your eye when you visit Dogwood. She is our only paint horse and she knows she's something special. The other mares were not sure they wanted another beautiful lady in the pasture, but she has earned a spot as one of their own. Daffy has been useful and fun as she has started integrating into therapy sessions. She is the horse that everyone wants a picture with. And we don't blame them!
